You will often hear someone talking about going for a session with a physiotherapist, but what does this actually mean and what do physiotherapists do?

Physiotherapists are instrumental in helping ill, injured or disabled patients regain body function and movement. They can work in hospitals, clinics, sports clubs, charities and workplaces. They will treat patients for physical problems related to various systems within the body. These include:

• musculoskeletal (bones, joints and soft tissues)
• neuromuscular (brain and nervous system)
• cardiovascular ( heart and blood circulation)
• respiratory (the organs that help you to breathe)

Physiotherapists help patients in different ways through:

• Movement and exercise which will vary in accordance with patient’s ability. During this, therapeutic physical exercises are used to strengthen the injured area. They need to be repeated daily for a number of weeks. In addition to specific exercises, low impact cardio like walking and swimming can be recommended to help increase mobility. There is strong evidence to suggest that physical activity can help prevent more than 20 different health conditions.
• Manual Therapy where the physiotherapist will aid recovery through massage. This will involve the physiotherapist using their hands to mobilise the injured patient’s joints or tissues. It is used to stimulate blood flow, decrease fluid retention, improve flexibility and relieve pain.
• Aquatic Therapy where the physiotherapist will carry out a series of exercises with the patient in water
• Other techniques such as heat, cold and acupuncture to ease pain.
